Shangrila Park,
Playa Blanca, Lanzarote Offering an excellent, all year round climate, with a year round average temperature of 22 degrees, Lanzarote is the most easterly of the seven major Canary Islands and lies in the Atlantic Ocean approximately 60 miles from the coast of Africa. The island offers a stunning array of beaches to choose from, both white and black sand, the most famous probably being Papagayo. At the southernmost tip of Lanzarote, with its surrounding landscape of volcanic ash, are the crystal clear waters and fine white sands form part of a wild stretch of beach composed of several small bays and coves. The villa is set in a quiet location about 4 kms. from the centre of Playa Blanca and just a short drive from Papagayo beach. It is possible to take trips on the fast cat to the nearby island of Fuerteventura, form the port, which is just a 5 minute drive away. The island is generally less commercialised than the better known Canary Islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, but still offers a huge variety of enjoyable things to do on your holiday. Teguise, the capital of Lanzarote up to 1852, has become one of the most important cultural and tourist centres on the island. Its streets, with palaces, convents and squares, preserve the unmistakable flavour of the passage of the centuries and narrate a thousand and one stories. It offers its visitors the opportunity to shop for gifts in the many crafts shops and bazaars, and there is an open market held every Sunday in the streets and squares of the village.
Lanzarote, being a volcanic island, has much to offer by way of caves, craters and grottos. The Jameos del Agua is one of the most interesting galleries of connecting caves and underground grottoes in the world, and lies to the north of Lanzarote. It houses a magnificent garden with a large swimming pool, a dance floor and two bars built into the niches formed by the rocks, creating an exciting nightclub. La Cueva de los Verdes, in the northern part of Lanzarote, forms part of a spectacular system of underground grottos. It is not only one of the most interesting volcanic formations on the island, but is also one of the longest volcanic galleries in the world (6 km long). El Golfo -the Gulf- is the name of the volcanic crater (today reduced to half of its original size) filled by underground seawater creating a green lagoon. The stunning contrast of black beach and deep green colouring caused by the algae which inhabit its waters, forms a unique and spectacular sight. The national park of Timanfaya is a singularly beautiful area, and is a living laboratory of scientific, geologic and geomorphologic interest. Mirador del Río is a lookout point and restaurant, located in the north end of the island on top of a cliff, 479 meters above sea level. The view of the island of La Graciosa and over the islet Montaña Clara is simply breathtaking. The Santa Bárbara Castle, now a museum, sits on the Guanapay Mountain overlooking Teguise. It was built by Sancho de Herrera in the 16th century as a watchtower for the coastlines on both sides of the island. For wine lovers, visit the El Grifo Wine Museum, housed in ancient bodegas that date back to 1775, and built on top of the solidified lava issued from the volcanic eruption of that century. Or visit the Cactus Garden, one of César Manrique's last works where he turned an old quarry into an impressive cactus plantation. For art lovers, The César Manrique Foundation is the island’s cultural centre, not only because it houses some of the works of the world famous artist, but also because it exhibits Manrique´s private collection of some prestigious artists, including Picasso.
